Wedding Dress Commission for Dana Davenport

Silk Organza, Silk Double Faced Satin, Mother of Pearl Buttons, Thread

—

When Dana commissioned me to create her wedding dress for 9 9 2023, she described her vision as "an interesting, modern, sexy rendition of a traditional hanbok" with cropped hanbok jackets revealing under boob and sheer red carpet gowns as references. We discussed the social repression embedded in our shared Korean lineage, marveling at how rich it is with opportunity for new adaptations. The intersection of Dana's bi-cultural identity, informed by her Korean mother and Black father, inspires her artistic practice. It was only right for her wedding dress to follow suit.

During our initial collaborative design session, in which I sketched as Dana spoke, she gravitated towards the sleek versus the voluminous avant-garde. As I later refined the final design, I aimed to elongate her five feet frame and to implement the notion of a less-is-more look inhabiting a universe of intricate details. In the process of creating this four piece ensemble: vest, top, garter, and skirt, I focused on impeccable pattern making and embroidered every seam.

This commission is a celebration of two whole individuals uniting in the promise of everlasting love. Congratulations, Dana and Marcel! Thank you for including me in your momentous day!
