When Dana commissioned me to create her wedding dress for Fall 2023, she described her vision as “an interesting, modern, sexy rendition of a traditional hanbok,” referencing cropped hanbok jackets and sheer gowns. Our conversations moved through her bicultural identity—shaped by her Korean mother and Black father—and the traditions she chooses to uphold, reshape, or let go. This approach to our shared Korean lineage informed our modern, bridal hanbok.
During our first meeting, I sketched as she spoke and Dana’s preference for the sleek over the voluminous emerged. In refining the final design, I sought to elongate her five-foot frame while embracing a less-is-more sensibility that still holds a world of intricate detail. Every seam in this four-piece ensemble—vest, top, garter, and skirt—is embroidered.
