Dana described her Fall 2023 dream wedding dress as “an interesting, modern, sexy rendition of a traditional hanbok,” referencing cropped hanbok jackets and sheer gowns. Our conversations moved through her bicultural identity—shaped by her Korean mother and Black father—and the traditions she chooses to uphold, amend, or let go. This approach to our shared Korean lineage inspired the design process.
During our first meeting, I sketched as Dana spoke and her preference for the sleek over the voluminous solidified. In refining the final design, I sought to elongate her five-foot frame while embracing a less-is-more sensibility that holds a world of intricate detail. Every seam in this four-piece ensemble—vest, top, garter, and skirt—is embroidered.
